La gramática arrives in Barcelona

15/01/2025

Focus’ new production, La gramática, written and directed by Ernesto Caballero and starring María Adánez and José Troncoso, arrives at the Teatre Romea. The show is a satire that pays homage to our relationship with the legacy that, according to Lázaro Carreter, constitutes our most solid heritage: language.

In the play, María Adánez plays a cleaning worker at the RAE (Royal Spanish Academy) with little education, who, due to an unexpected accident, becomes a consummate expert in language and grammar. A renowned neuroscientist, played by José Troncoso, offers to subject her to a unique process of linguistic deprogramming—in other words, a “reset” to resolve the many problems her zeal for correctness is causing in her life.

Ernesto Caballero, responsible for works such as Viejo amigo Cicerón, starring Josep Maria Pou at the Romea, and La autora de las meninas, starring Carmen Machi at the Teatre Goya, is both the writer and director.

La gramática premiered last autumn at Nave 10 in Matadero Madrid and sold out every single performance.

The public’s success was accompanied by critical acclaim, with praise for Caballero’s direction and script, as well as the performances of the two protagonists. José-Miguel Vila from Diario Crítico wrote: “La Gramática educates, captivates, and entertains from start to finish in a comedy that no one should miss.”

La gramática will be on stage at the Teatre Romea for just two weeks, from February 12 to 23, and tickets are already on sale.
